Read the CFI model on the console label before opening. These internal guides target the 2020 Disc Edition (CFI-10xxA).
CFI-11xx, CFI-12xx, Slim CFI-20xx and Pro CFI-70xx have different internal layouts. Do not transfer screw maps or drive procedures between revisions. Sony’s M.2 reference includes separate model instructions.
A mechanical or optical repair must preserve the original paired drive electronics.
Signs to investigate
- Discs not recognised
- Disc loading noise
- Repeated read failures
Prepare your bench
- Plastic opening pick
- Non-metallic spudger
- Organised screw tray
- TR8 security Torx driver
- Phillips screwdriver
Access first
Complete these access guides before the component-specific notes below.
Diagnose, isolate, then service
- 01
Test more than one clean, compatible disc and confirm software is current.
- 02
A technician should remove the mechanism using the matched guide, supporting its flex cables and distinguishing locked from friction-fit connectors.
- 03
Preserve the original drive logic electronics. A donor assembly is not automatically a working whole-drive replacement.
- 04
Inspect the loading mechanism and laser flex before component service; then reassemble and test disc loading and reading.
Do not power an exposed laser or assume an arbitrary donor drive will pair.
Several known-good discs load, read and eject consistently.
Restore all covers, shielding and cable routing before powered tests. Keep each screw in its original position. If fit or resistance changes, reopen and inspect rather than tightening harder.
